The Twilight States

The Twilight States was a musical project active in Tokyo's underground and independent electronic music scene during the 2000s.

They performed at experimental and ambient live events, most notably the alternative sound art event series "sound leaves," which was regularly hosted at intimate underground venues such as Loop-Line in Sendagaya and Bar Drop.

Musical Style & Characteristics

Sound Aesthetic

Their music operated at the intersection of ambient, drone, post-rock, and electronica. Built around textured soundscapes, their work often featured layered spatial guitar feedback, analog synthesizers, and heavy tape delays and reverbs, exploring the dynamic range between deep stillness and abrasive noise.

Audio-Visual Integration

Reflecting the core ethos of events like "sound leaves," their performances placed heavy emphasis on immersive experiences. Live sound was frequently paired with synchronized experimental projections and spatial visual installations.

Scene & Distribution

Rather than pursuing commercial distribution or standard album rollouts, the project functioned within Tokyo’s close-knit DIY electronic/experimental community, sharing work primarily through live performances, limited CD-Rs, and cassette releases.
